Bloc Stars 2024

We’re back again with our 3rd edition of Bloc Stars. This year, we’re going all out to make it possible for our entire community to come together, celebrate, and climb side by side. This event signifies our love and appreciation for every single one of our members and non-members, and we want this event to encompas the essence of City Bloc. With this in mind, we’ve come up with a new & improved plan for this years event. Read on to learn more.

Event Highlights:

• Updated Competition Format: We’ve refined our setup with the aim to cater to every skill level. Expect climbs (and challenges)  from V0 to V7 that are designed to suit your abilities and provide a fitting challenge.

• Qualifier & Challenges: Take on a circuit of 25 diverse climbing problems and 5 exciting challenges. With a points system based on your performance, you’ll have the opportunity to advance through to the semi-finals and finals.

• Semi-Finals & Finals: We will put 30 climbers through to the semi finals where they will take their chances on the Bloc Stars Gauntlet. Then the top 2 in each category will face off in a high energy head to head final. 

• Open to All: Bloc Stars 2024 offers a laid-back and supportive setting where everyone, regardless of skill level or experience, can enjoy climbing and camaraderie.

• Food & Music: Enjoy delicious offerings from Cassy’s Caribbean Food and groove to lively music from House of Loft, creating a vibrant and social atmosphere.

Check In – 12:00

Just a quick heads-up: we kindly ask that you don’t arrive before the start time. We’ll have the climbing centre open in the morning, but we’ll be busy running kids sessions and getting everything set up for the event. We want to make sure everything’s in top shape to give you an unforgettable experience. So, we’d greatly appreciate it if you could hold off on arriving until the check-in time.

To beat the queues, make sure everyone has completed the City Bloc registration form before the event. For those under 18, an attending adult completes the form and adds <18s. Supervising adults must stick around (unless the <18s are junior assessed). Ratio: 1 adult to 2 under 18s.

Qualifier & Challenges Window – 12:30 PM – 15:30 PM

Get ready for the exciting part of the competition! In the qualifiers, we will have a set up a circuit of 25 problems and 5 fun challenges for you to tackle. This will run very similarly to our Winter/Summer league where you have to try and complete as many of these as you can. You will have 3 attempts to try and climb each bloc, succeeding on 1st go will reward you with 10 points, 2nd go 7 points and 3rd go 4 points. Your scores from qualifiers will rank you into categories. These are Red, Blue, Grey, Orange, Yellow and Purple, with Red category being the lowest scores and Purple being the highest.

Semi Finals – 16:00-17:00

The top 5 climbers from each category (30 people total) will advance to our semi-final route: the Bloc Stars Gauntlet. This exciting challenge is a traverse around the comp wall, tailored to each specific category level, but everyone runs the same Gauntlet. The goal is simple—climb as far as you can and outdo your fellow competitors.

While the semi-finalists are battling it out, the rest of the event attendees can relax, grab a drink, and enjoy the spectacle. It’s a perfect time to cheer everyone on and soak up the atmosphere. The top 2 climbers who manage to climb the furthest in each category will then advance to the final. It’s a thrilling test of skill and determination, with the top scorers moving forward to compete for the ultimate title of Bloc Stars Champion.

This is a head to head race, so I hope you’ve been watching the speed climbing recently. Make your way to the top of the wall the fastest and be crowned Bloc Stars champion 2024.

Finals – 17.30

Get ready for the ultimate test of speed and skill in the Bloc Stars 2024 final! The top 2 climbers from each category, after mastering the Bloc Stars Gauntlet, will go head to head in a speed climbing race to the top. Each category will have its handicap or level adjusted, ensuring a fair and exciting competition.

This is where the pressure ramps up, and the crowd will be buzzing as climbers race against the clock, just like in speed climbing, to see who can reach the top first. Category champions will be crowned, and the fastest climber overall will earn the prestigious title of Bloc Stars Champion 2024.

Whether you’re competing or cheering from the sidelines, this final showdown is not to be missed. Come and celebrate climbing, fun, and community as we crown the champions!

Under 18?

Any participants under the age of 18 must have an accompanying adult with them for the entire event unless they have been junior assessed. Please note that while there won’t be any problems set specifically for children, the scoring system is designed to give everyone a fair shot at reaching the finals. The required ratio is 1 adult per 2 under 18s.

Food and Drink

At this year’s event, we’re excited to have a food stall provided by Cassy’s Caribbean Food, with music from House of Loft creating the perfect atmosphere. We’ll be serving soft drinks, snacks, and Northern Monk beer for those spectating the semi-finals and finals. Plus, Tenzing will be on free vend all day, so you can stay refreshed as you enjoy the action!

Our competition is designed to be laid-back and casual, with a strong emphasis on friendly competition and mutual support. We don’t have age or gender categories, allowing everyone to participate side by side. The main focus is on climbing, having an amazing time, and fostering a strong sense of community.
