questions

faQ.

· Entry & Cost

Do I need to be a member to enter?

Nope. Members and non-members alike — the league’s free for everyone. You’ll just need your usual entry to climb.

Is it actually free?

Yes. No entry fee, no league subscription, nothing hidden. The only thing you pay for is climbing — same as any other day at the wall.

What experience do I need?

None. Genuinely. The 30 problems each round go from beginner-friendly to absolutely savage — there’s something for everyone. Plenty of climbers do their first ever comp through Summer League.

Can I just enter one round?

Yes. Enter as many as you fancy. The more you do, the better your shot at the final, but a single round counts.

Can I miss a round and still take part?

Absolutely. Climb as many or as few rounds as you want. Your scores still count — missing a round doesn’t take you out of the running.

Can I jump in mid-season?

Yes. Sign up any time before the round you want to enter. Your scores from the rounds you climb still count.

· Format & Climbing

How do I start a problem?

Look for four tags marking the start, all with the problem number on. Get all four limbs on those holds, then go.

What’s a bonus zone?

A hold marked with tape and the word ‘zone’, usually around the middle of the problem. If you can’t top out, hold the bonus in control to grab a point.

How does scoring work?

Flash a problem first time, you get 10 points. Second go = 7. Third = 4. Anything after = 2. Bonus zone (if you couldn’t top out) = 1. The BETA app does the maths.

Do I have to climb at a certain time?

No. Each round runs three weeks. Climb whenever the wall’s open across that window — your pace, your call.

What if I forget to log a climb?

Update your scores in BETA whenever — you’ve got the whole round to add things in. Just remember which problems you sent.

· Categories

Which one’s me?

Female, Male, or Open — pick whichever fits. Plus age categories for over-45s and dedicated paraclimbing categories. You can change before the season starts if you want.

What’s the Open category?

A category for climbers of any gender. Sits alongside Female and Male — pick whichever feels right.

Can I climb with my mates if we’re in different categories?

Of course. You’re climbing the same problems on the same wall — categories only affect how scores are ranked. Climb with whoever, whenever.

· BETA App

I’ve never used BETA — is it complicated?

Not really. Download the app, find Summer League 26 under Competitions, tap to register. Score each problem after you climb it. The app tallies everything for you.

Where’s the leaderboard?

Live in BETA at any time. We also drop the standings on Instagram at the end of every round.

I logged a wrong score — can I fix it?

Yes. Edit your scores in BETA any time during the round. After the round closes, scores lock in.

· Under 18s

Can under 18s take part?

Yes — with a supervising adult in the building. One adult can supervise up to two under-18s. The supervising adult fills out an Adult registration form plus an Under 18 form for each climber they’re looking after.

My teen wants to climb without me — can they?

If they’re 14-17, yes — through a junior assessment. Once they’re signed off, they can register as Junior Unsupervised and climb without an adult in the centre. Email [email protected] or ask at reception to get one booked.

I’m supervising but not climbing — do I have to pay?

No. Supervising adults who aren’t climbing don’t pay. Just check in at reception when you arrive.

What’s the youngest age?

We generally say climbs are suitable from 14 up. The comp blocs are mainly set with adult climbers in mind, but younger climbers (14+) are welcome to give them a go.

· Launch Nights & The Final

Do I have to come to launch nights?

No. Launch nights are when we open the new round — 7pm Friday, free pizza, music — but you can climb the problems any time over the three-week round. Come down if you fancy the buzz, skip if it’s not your thing.

What’s the live final?

The big one. At the end of Round 5, we look at total scores across the season for each category and the top scorers from each go through to climb in the live final on 4 September.

How do you choose the finalists?

Top scorers from each category at the end of Round 5. We’ll let you know if you’ve made it through.

Can I watch the final without entering?

Yes — everyone’s welcome. Honestly the atmosphere is the best part. Pull up a sofa, grab a Northern Monk, watch the finalists battle it out.

What if I’m leading my category but get injured before the final?

Drop us an email — we’ll work something out. Worst case we run reserves from the leaderboard.
